Introducing solids workshop at my house

In this 4-hour workshop that takes place on a monthly basis at my house in Queen’s Park, the focus is on Baby-Led Weaning, although I also cover everything parents need to know about spoon-feeding.

As well as discussing the theories and practicalities, such as the evidence about when to start introducing solids, which foods to give and which to avoid, the difference between gagging and choking, allergies, and how to avoid picky eating, I will provide you with a recommended equipment and books list.

Each time, I invite a mother or father who has attended a previous workshop, to come back with their baby, so their baby can demonstrate their Baby-Led Weaning skills for us at my kitchen table, while we all have lunch together. I bake a cake, and participants are encouraged to bring a packed lunch.

Here's a film of Beatrice, another one of 'my' BLW babies, enjoying some mussels: bee vs. mussels

£100 per person – maximum of 10 participants

Please note: I’m currently not running the live workshops due to the pandemic however my Zoom workshops are running regularly

Introducing solids workshop via Zoom

Having facilitated introducing solids workshops in my home for over 10 years, I’ve now created a PowerPoint presentation with all the relevant information, and with lots of photos and videos of babies eating and drinking, all of which have been kindly sent to me by parents who’ve done my introducing solids workshops and whose babies are happy Baby-Led Weaners.

As well as covering the principals of Baby-Led Weaning, I discuss everything parents need to know about introducing solids in detail. We discuss the theories and practicalities, such as the evidence about when to start introducing solids, which foods to give and which to avoid, the difference between gagging and choking, allergies, and how to avoid picky eating. I also provide a detailed recommended equipment and books list.

The Zoom session is very interactive, with participants talking about their experiences of eating as children, and able to ask all the questions they want. In addition, I ask a parent who has recently introduced solids using the Baby-Led method to sit in on part of the Zoom session to answer questions.

'“In September 2020 I did a BLW workshop (via Zoom) with Cordelia. I remember that when I saw the video she shared where a little baby girl was happily eating mussels, I thought it was so amazing! I wondered if my baby at some point would do the same and it happened tonight! Here is my little Sebastian (at 15 months) enjoying his dinner tonight. Thank you so much Cordelia for introducing us to BLW.”

Feedback from parents who attended an in-person workshop

“I’m so thankful I discovered the BLW method with you, as all 3 of my kids eat beautifully! (My sister-in-law has two young kids who are still on shop-bought baby mush at almost 3). I’m so thankful mine love real food. And real tastes! No one has heard of BLW in the countryside (where I now live) but it’s one of best decisions I made as a mother. I really believe that!”

"We have had so much fun teaching Zara to eat through BLW and she is thoroughly enjoying mealtimes!!! Thanks so much for all the help and support you gave us in the solids workshop.”

"Thank you so much for the fascinating class today, for your warm hospitality, excellent guidance and delicious cake. I really enjoyed meeting the other mums and I look forward to letting Bahia lead the way when we start our food adventure together."

"I wanted to say thanks for introducing us to BLW. Saachi is now 9.5 months and we are loving travelling with her and not having to worry about food.”

"Advice and information was exactly what I was waiting for. I got all the answers I needed before starting my baby on solids."

"I want to thank you for the brilliant workshop last week. I found it extremely informative and it gave me a good understanding of baby led weaning.”

“Your introducing solids workshop and the Facebook group gave me the confidence to go with Baby-Led Weaning. I have to say that apart from the fact that she likes eating almost everything, the best thing about BLW is that we’ve never had to take turns feeding her. We all eat at the same time, either at home, or while eating out with friends, as she’s always fed herself. It makes a big difference when you see your friends ‘struggling’ in a restaurant because they have to feed their children, while their food goes cold.”

“Thank you very much for your BLW class. Seeing our one year-old enjoy her meals (she's become quite a flavour hound) and start to develop a healthy relationship with food is so positive. My parents were in town from Sydney for her birthday and they absolutely loved it! My mum who's a surgeon couldn't stop commenting on her dexterity skills. Our French friends can't believe she's never had purée and is happy to devour a bowl of pasta or any 'grown up' type food (apparently doesn't happen in France)."

"Cordelia provided lots of practical, reassuring information. Baby feeding doesn't seem anymore like another 'job' to do.”

“Cordelia was inspiring on this workshop. I came along with an open mind and left 100% sure that Baby Led Weaning was the way we were going to go. We are now enjoying Eva's experiences with food almost as much as she is. It's amazing and we are all having so much fun. I'm so proud of how she has taken to it.”

"Dear Cordelia, I wanted to share my BLW experience with you as I thought you might enjoy hearing feedback. Aaryan started sitting up independently over the weekend so we started him on Monday. It is truly amazing to watch. He had really taken to it. Today he made light work of sweet potato wedges."

“Leonardo simply adores exploring new foods, tastes and textures. He is so happy and my husband and I have a lot of fun during our family meals. I am so glad I took your class and found out about baby led weaning!  All your advice and information was really useful. We want to say thank you!

"Thanks for a great course yesterday! It was really fun and informative and I am excited to give A her first pasta meal in a few months' time!”

“The session today was incredibly educational and fun. It gave me a lot of confidence. I really enjoyed meeting the other mums with their beautiful babies too."

"The workshop was everything we wanted it to be: clear, thorough and participative. We'll recommend it to our friends!"

"I really enjoyed the workshop and certainly have a greater understanding of breastfeeding and what 'weaning' actually means. The demo by baby Annabel brought BLW to life, and I'm grateful for the wealth of reading and book information you provide. I would highly recommend the workshop!"

Feedback from parents who took part in a Zoom workshop

Michelle

“We started BLW yesterday at 7.5 months. It’s so fun to see our baby play and interact with his food. We’re only two meals in, but so far he’s like a duck to water.

Thanks Cordelia for your amazing workshop and encouragement!”

Natasha

We attended your online course a few months back and just wanted to say how fantastically informative we found the whole thing!

Our daughter Juniper is thriving on solids alongside breastfeeding. She’s had everything from asparagus to steak. She particularly loves dahl, chia pudding, avocados and oranges and my chilli con carne.

We particularly valued your intro to solids alongside breastfeeding as we didn’t have an easy ride with breastfeeding in the beginning and it was nearly game over for me at 6 weeks.”

Heleri

“Highly highly recommend! Our girl at 10 months is loving everything we put in front of her (big on flavour), mostly due to the confidence this session gave us.”

Magda

“So worth it! Our second boy is a champion eater thanks to all the info we got from this workshop. Thank you again Cordelia.”

Lina and Adam

“Just wanted to say many thanks for the course yesterday and for all the other information you've sent through. It was fantastic and has made something we were really quite daunted by feel much more manageable now!”

Keara

“We watched your workshop recording and are reading the follow-up email links bit by bit. There is SO much information out there and it is so brilliant to have it brought together for us by someone we trust. Thank you so so much.”

Sophia

“Yesterday my husband I did Cordelia’s Introducing Solids workshop and we already feel much more confident about baby led weaning. We tried it a bit on our own over the last month or so but I ended up reverting to shop bought purees which I really didn't want to do due to the high sugar content and lack of nutrients.

Yesterday afternoon with our new found knowledge and having dispelled a few myths we tried again and are already enjoying it more... and as a result of course, so is our baby! My only regret is not doing the course sooner. I wanted to share this in case it helps anyone else who might be feeling nervous to hop on the baby led weaning wagon!”

Diana

“Couldn’t recommend this workshop more!!! It changed our lives. All we want is for others to have the same experience.”

Nicole

"I would hugely recommend the introducing solids workshop - there was a great camaraderie despite being online - so nice to share the experience with other mums who are at the same stage and have the same questions. Next best thing to being at the NWL breastfeeding ‘salon’! And just as chilled, inclusive and helpful.”

Ronee

"Thank you so much for the informative talk. It was a fantastic zoom talk and so easy to follow with such comprehensive slides.”

Monica

"After a bad experience my first time weaning, your workshop gave me confidence for a fresh start my my second baby”

Katie

“Thank you so much for the invaluable information you have provided. I’ve spent the last few days reading through it and making notes so I’m prepared when the time comes. S isn’t quite sitting up on her own yet. I now have the confidence to follow the BLW approach.”

Virginia

“The introducing solids workshop is great. Freddie eats everything and with no fuss, enjoys spices, etc. Ottolenghi, Rick Stein and Nigella recipes are his favourites. He calls them by name now and points at the pictures!”

Natalia (who did a one-to-one introducing solids workshop with me in October 2022)

“Thank you very much for your time yesterday and all follow-up information you have shared! The workshop and all follow-up materials are so well-structured, and everything is very helpful for my feeding journey:)”

Fiorenza

"The online format worked really well as we attended from the comfort of our home and so it meant that my little one had all his toys to play with during the workshop. Cordelia's shared loads of knowledge and latest evidence on introducing solids. I also really appreciated the links to useful resources shared before and after the workshop. It was great to get the chance to hear from a mother about her experience of baby led weaning and we were lucky to do a Q&A with her too. A lot of tips and practical aspects were shared with us (for example, accessories and food to avoid and why) and that was also really very helpful.”

Sophie

“Thank you very much for today's course. I felt anxious about introducing Albie to food but I am now feeling extremely excited about it. I can't wait to sit round the table with him and watch him explore food. I've learnt so much and really enjoyed telling my husband all about it.”

Carla

“The workshop was so important - thank you. It’s amazing how it helped me to remember the things you said when I’m choosing our son’s food and preparing it. It’s a very respectful way to feed our baby.”

Kirsti

“My husband and I both commented how knowledgeable you are and how comprehensive the workshop was. We left so excited to introduce our baby to solids (when she’s ready!) and feel very confident about doing so. I also thought that opening with reflecting on our own childhood relationship with food was a nice touch that really laid the foundation.”

Sian

I did your BLW workshop about 4 months back, and have found it so helpful.

We weaned my son (my first child) onto solids early and used purées. Getting “enough” food into him was a big preoccupation and I remember how stressful I would find the days he wouldn’t eat as much as I thought he needed, or at all.

Your workshop was a huge source of reassurance as well as information. My daughter (my second child) hasn’t had a huge appetite but has enjoyed trying all kinds of different things, and I’ve not worried about how much she eats. It’s really just been a pleasure to watch her explore and learn.

We are just now noticing an uptick in the quantity of food she eats as she approaches ten months. And so I thought back to the workshop this evening as I watched her tucking into some mushroom noodles and strawberries. In case you’d like to see her, I’ve attached a little video.”

Tina

“Thanks for a great workshop yesterday- I learnt a lot and still taking it all in!”

Jennifer

“Many thanks for the excellent course today, Cordelia. The videos especially were so helpful.”
